Energy Manufacturing Company, Inc., of Monticello, IA was awarded a safety award for Incident Rate Excellence from the Iowa-Illinois Safety Council during their 58th Annual Professional Development Conference and Expo held in Bettendorf, Iowa, on April 28-29, 2011. Iowa First Lady Chris Branstad was on hand to congratulate the award recipients.

Energy Manufacturing was one of over 150 businesses, industries, and government agencies in Illinois and Iowa to receive an award for promoting active safety programs and reducing OSHA recordable injuries among their employees. To qualify for this award, applicants had to demonstrate an incident rate lower than the national average for their specific industry. The award was presented for outstanding achievement in accident prevention during the 2010 calendar year.

The Iowa-Illinois Safety Council is a Chapter of the National Safety Council and is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to protecting life and promoting health. The mission of the Council is to educate society to adopt safety, health, and environmental practices, and to provide high quality, value added training and services. Energy Manufacturing and Rota Engineering Ltd. (of Manchester, U.K.) have been informed by IFPE 2011 that they have been accepted for a joint technical presentation at the “Innovations Theater” during the show. The Theater will run March 23-25, 2011, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The Energy / Rota presentation will address electronic hydraulic cylinder position sensing technology. Specifically, the presentation will explain external position sensing technology that does not require a hollow cylinder rod. This approach has the advantage of maintaining full cylinder strength and rod buckling capability, while providing position sensing accuracy of better than (+/-) 1 mm.

In its February, 2010 issue, Hydraulics and Pneumatics Magazine has again published an article featuring Energy Manufacturing Company.  A photo related to the article is featured on the front cover of the magazine.

The article, which begins on page 12, is titled “Smart Cylinders Maintain The Gap.”  It tells the story of how Energy partnered with ROTA Engineering, Ltd., of Manchester, UK, and Price Engineering, a fluid power distributor in Wisconsin.  The three companies worked together to develop an innovative electronic position-sensing technology for H&S (Steinberg) Manufacturing of Marshfield, Wisconsin, the OEM customer.

In a joint article published in the September 2009 issue of Hydraulics and Pneumatics Magazine, Energy Manufacturing and Rota Engineeing, Ltd. have announced a new hydraulic cylinder position sensing technology.

This technology eliminates the need for a hollow cylinder rod. Instead, an external sensing “bar” utilizing Hall-Effect technology senses the position of the hydraulic cylinder’s piston. This is accomplished by the placement of a permanent magnet within the piston. The magnet propagates a magnetic field through the steel wall of the hydraulic cylinder, providing a locating signal to the sensor.

There are several advantages to this approach:

• Typically, lower overall cost (i.e., no need to gun-drill cylinder rod)
• Full rod buckling strength is maintained
• The cylinder is easier to assemble, install, and service
• A wide variety of sensor inputs and outputs are available
• The permanent magnet in the piston should never need to be replaced
• The external sensor is readily accessible and easy to replace, if necessary
• If the sensing bar is replaced, re-calibration is not necessary
• The sensing bar is small, and its location along the outside of the hydraulic cylinder wall minimizes the potential for environmental damage
• Positioning accuracy is +/- .5mm or better; more than adequate for most mobile equipment
• There are no cables or wires used, and hence no concerns regarding stretching or breakage due to ice, plant limbs, or other environmental obstructions
• Should machine power be lost and then recovered, the sensor will send the current position
• OEM’s can prepare hydraulic cylinders with magnets so end users can add sensing at a later time, if so desired
